A Childhood Dream
At the age of four Shoma gave her very first public performance at
the Sharada International School, Manipal and the applause that she
received from the audience was a confirmation of her success in the
field of dance. Shoma became a student of Kathak at the Bharatiya
Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, at the age of six. Moving to Bangalore, she
shifted to learning Bharatnatyam under the able tutelage of Sri
Ashok Kumar. She blossomed as a Bharatnatyam dancer, performing with
her Guru, in and around Karnataka.

Shoma began choreography at a professional level at the tender age
of eleven! A keen interest and love for the art, was an initiative
to try the other varied styles of dance. As a result, Shoma
successfully choreographed over two hundred dances by the time she
was twenty!
A Distinction in Folk Dance, the ‘Best Dancer Award’ in School
(Carmel Convent High School, Bangalore) and College (Christ College,
Bangalore) along with various other accolades further fuelled her
dream of becoming a professional dancer, a decision she’d taken when
she was eleven!
Devotion
Remarkable passion for dance encouraged Shoma, at the age of
nineteen to depart the comforts of her home in Bangalore and shift
to Mumbai to expand her dancing skills. After nine years of
Bharatnatyam, Shoma felt a tug towards her first love, Kathak. Shoma
was fortunate in getting the best teacher in Guru Nandita Puri
(Student of Padmashree Roshan Kumari) of the Jaipur Gharana. Shoma
performed with her Guru at the prestigious Mumbai festival and
accompanied her to the famous Khajuraho Festival. For a brief period
Shoma was fortunate to receive guidance from Late. Sri. Bireshwar
Gautam (Student of Late. Ms. DamayantiJoshi) under the Lucknow
Gharana. |
